Question the role of the art critic in a digital age
A practical essay on authority, description, audience reach, and the responsibility to make an argument inspectable.
Digital publishing changed how quickly a critical response can travel, but speed does not remove the need for attention. The critic’s useful role is not to deliver a final ranking. It is to make a route through an encounter, show the evidence for an interpretation, and leave the reader able to test the argument.
Describe before declaring
A reader can disagree with an interpretation and still learn from a precise description. Start with the work’s material, arrangement, scale, and setting. Description is not a neutral prelude; it is the ground on which a critic makes a claim.
Show the hinge
Every strong essay has a point where observation becomes argument. Mark that hinge clearly. If a colour, gesture, or spatial decision is carrying the conclusion, return to it and explain why it matters rather than hiding the move behind authority.
Make the audience visible
Online writing reaches readers with different levels of context. Give them a way in without flattening the work. A short glossary, a related reading, or an explanation of method can widen access while preserving complexity.
Observe first, name the decision, then test the interpretation against the whole work.
